Gentle Consulting 5 - Envirochem 1

21st Apr 2010

On 21 April 2010 Gentle Consulting and Envirochem took to the field in a 7-a-side charity football match at Flemming Park, Eastleigh. All proceeds from the event were donated to Gentle Consulting's partner Charity, Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity, which helps to enhance the quality of life for people with cancer and other life limiting illnesses through the provision of palliative care. The match itself was a tight affair for the 1st half, with neither side willing to take too many risks. The deadlock was broken when Tom Prow's cross was inadvertently deflected into his own goal by an Envirochem defender. The game continued to be close and Envirochem drew level with a coolly converted penalty after Mark Chamberlain was adjudged to have entered his own area illegally. Gentle Consulting took the lead after Jack Goodwin slotted the ball past the oncoming Envirochem goalkeeper after being put through by Tom Prow's defence splitting through ball.

The 2nd half was a much more open encounter, with Envirochem hitting the woodwork with a speculative long range effort direct from the restart. Gentle Consulting then took control of the game with youngsters Sam Shrubsole and Tim Appleton working hard and playing some nice passes from the middle of the park whilst Pete Milne and Mark Chamberlain helped to keep things steady in defence. 2-1 became 3-1 after Marc Shrubsole ran through the centre of the Envirochem defence and finished from the edge of the area. Leigh Channon then pulled up with a thigh strain after sprinting for a ball and was forced to play in goal for Gentle Consulting for the remainder of the match. The scoreline soon became 4-1 when Jack Goodwin beat his man before shooting past the Envirochem goalkeeper. Marc Shrubsole wrapped up the scoring with a composed penalty making the final score Gentle Consulting 5-1 Envirochem. The score line could have been closer but thanks to a couple of superb saves from Leigh Channon, Envirochem were kept at bay.

Gentle Consulting brought with them an army of travelling fans including: Bill Everton, James Everton, Chris Snell, Darren Rattew, Steve Emmerson, Geoff Wardell and Colin Bates (who also doubled up as official match day photographer).

After the match both sets of players retired to the Cricketers Inn where they were warmly welcomed with refreshments.
