After six months of planning, a large self-erecting crane parked outside Winchester Guildhall at 6.00 a.m. on Sunday 18 July 2010 to lift into place a container consisting of air conditioning units and chillers which will service the King Alfred Hall and conference rooms, also materials for the new roof link that will give access to the Walton room via additional stairs.
The crane shadowed the clock tower by some 15 meters and a large crowd gathered to watch the lifting operations.
A team of approximately 26, headed by Gentle Consulting's Geoff Wardell and Malcolm Hardy, were involved. Winchester City Council's senior safety advisor, Bob Cole and its head of estates, Kevin Warren, were also on hand.
The major refurbishment works are due to be completed by December 2010.
